Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is always best, but not always possible, nor perfect. How can we promote easier breastfeeding? Be prepared.

Before the baby is born, get some gentle sun exposure to the nipples and if inverted try and massage them out. After birth, ensure earlier and effective latching (get help/guidance); don’t use the nipples as a dummy! Use a good lanolin based moisturiser, laser and ultrasound can help and be aware that breastfeeding should NOT be painful! Often that suggests poor latch, candida (thrush) or other infections.

Remembering that not every mother can breastfeed, and in such cases support, advice and comfort should be offered not criticism.
