Constipation is the abdominal scourge of the modern world; it is related to many factors but predominantly related to diet and the “fear of the toilet”. Girls, in particular, avoid restrooms and school toilets for number twos as they are seen or described as dirty and sadly, often unsafe. So the stooling reflex is ignored long enough for the colon/rectum to distend and eventually stop signalling the brain. Hard poos follow, and pain becomes a secondary factor that leads to stool holding and the ugly, smelly cycle continues. Proper diet; stool softeners that are safe for long-term use; pain management and routine will fix the problem but it can take several months and even years to get the gut back to its original state.
