Gord is gastro-oesophageal reflux disease that covers a host of early infantile complaints and is often blamed for colicky behaviour. All babies reflux, burping, winding, positing are normal; it becomes an issue when it:
- Causes severe heartburn pain
- Compromises feeding and growth
- Aspiration into the lungs occur and cause ALTE (acute life-threatening episodes)
Emphasis on feeding techniques, winding, sleeping position and milk should preclude any medical intervention. There are too many children on unnecessary antacids, leading to gut dysmotility; infection risks and more. These medications should be reserved for the most severe reflux cases, and treatment should show a dramatic change in symptoms.
