Gums and teething are a common topic among parents .”False teething” can begin at 3-4 months, and there is a lot of drooling and chewing, though teeth can appear any time from birth to 14 months. An excellent rule to follow is the rule of 6s:
- 1st tooth/teeth at 6 months
- 6 teeth by 1 year
- 12 (2×6) by 2 years
- Lose first milk tooth at 6 years
Associated signs of teething are perioral rashes, lots of drool, loose acidic poos and sometimes a low-grade fever (< 38°C). Topical chews toys and powders and creams are helpful as well as NSAIDs (pain killers) if the pain is severe.
