Oral Health

Oral health starts from birth, sterilising dummies and teats ensure lower risks of oral Candida (Thrush).  A milky tongue is normal and does not need cleaning, but a white plaque on the lips/cheeks/tongue is not normal, and 90% of the time it is thrush. “False” teething occurs from 3-4 months as the teeth push up out of the jaw into the gums, and though teeth can be present at birth, most kids follow the rule of 6’s:

  • Tooth 1: 6 months
  • Six teeth – 12 months
  • 12 teeth – 24 months
  • Loose milk teeth – 6 years

Your child’s first dental check-up should be at 18-24 months. Fluoride supplement remains controversial and should be discussed with your dentist with reference to:

  • Dental family history
  • Use of fluoride toothpaste
  • Local water fluoride levels
