Otitis refers to inflammation or infection of the ear.

There are two types of ear infections:

  • Otitis Media is common in kids where the eustachian tube is narrow and bent, and snot is frequent. This is an infection of the middle ear with mucous/pus building up behind the eardrum often with pain (especially lying down), fever and prolonged nasal congestion.
  • Otitis Externa is usually seen in older kids who are swimming or surfing. This is inflammation in the external ear canal and is painful when the outer ear is bumped or pulled (putting on a t-shirt is sore).
