Rashes due to allergic causes
Newborns
- A red scaly rash with early “cradle cap” in the eyebrows and mainly on face, scalp, arms and chest is seborroeic dermatitis or baby eczema and can be a marker of pending allergies or just a reaction to “my new world”. Moisturizing usually suffices.
Older kiddies
- Eczema or allergic dermatitis often involves the creases – elbows, behind knees and can be atopic/allergic. Is generally itchy.
- Hives or urticaria are classic rapidly appearing and disappearing raised red wheels. If accompanied by a cough or other respiratory symptoms, then urgent medical attention needs to be sort. It can be triggered by food, contact items, cold/hot, exercise and more.
- Papular urticaria is an allergic reaction to an insect bite. It is often confused with Chicken Pox as the red welts form a hard blister and come up in clusters.
